Prostitution is Legal in Costa Rica What Can I Say?

"Prostitution is LEGAL in Costa Rica, Prostitution is LEGAL in Costa Rica... I'm not sure what to tell you."

Gay and Straight prostitution is LEGAL in Costa Rica- PERIOD. I didn't get TONS of emails crucifying me for supposedly 'promoting' underage sex in Costa Rica and lacking in overall moral fiber (the latter may be somewhat true), but I got enough that I feel inclined to respond. This is the post in question: GAY Prostitution in Costa Rica. First off, I find it amusing I have so many readers who are obviously 'VERY right of Reagan'. Either they're policing 'the enemy', or can't help but be drawn to the darker side of gay within themselves. Anyway...Prostitution is legal here, I don't write the laws. I'm not promoting anything. I write based on my knowledge, experience and observations while living the 'gay' life in Costa Rica- whatever that means. I know the law but I also know many prostitutes and 'gay for pay' guys... as well as the guys who want to 'get' with them. Stay at any 'gay' or 'gay friendly' hotel in Costa Rica and you meet LOTS of people. So yeah,I can provide some insight to the gay traveler they may or may not have known.

I realize underage sex happens here, although I haven't seen it, I have seen HUGE gaps in age, such as a 72-year old getting with an 18-year old 'gay for pay' boy. *Personally, I have no problem with this arrangement as long as it's legal and ALL parties act accordingly and I don't define 'accordingly', they do. Pedophiles and 'Chester the Molester' types are the exception... BUT PLEEEZE, there are 'bad' people in all walks of life... I'm a strong critic of the Catholic Church, but I don't believe for a minute they all abuse alter boys, it's ALWAYS a small percentage of folks who mess it up for the rest of us. And of course the media ATTENTION for these types of behaviors HELP sell magazines (advertisement) and always, ALWAYS, makes the problem appear MUCH worse than it really is. I'm not sayin it's not an ISSUE, I'm just saying it often overblown.

Why am I explaining this to a couple of dozen WANKERS who I KNOW have more of a problem with SEX itself than prostitution- obviously raised to believe sex is somewhat DIRTY, which in turn fosters various sexual hang-ups and self-esteem issues these WANKERS undoubtedly possess in spades. So please, look inward first then you won't have time to write me with your undeserved diatribe.

Gay Prostitution in Costa Rica

Prostitution is LEGAL in Costa Rica, so many come here solely for the SEX... nothing wrong with that as not everyone's into sloths and whitewater rafting. Age of consent for any SEX is 18. Don't be mislead or misinformed by some of the 'sketchier' websites out there, BELIEVE ME, it's 18.

GAY sex is readily accessible in Costa Rica and I've already mentioned in previous posts how 'easy' the guys are here. Even MOST of the straight Tico's are willing to be 'gay for pay' after a couple beers and in many cases the 'pay' can be the alcohol and sometimes they're even 'gay' without the 'pay'- WHOO HOO!

First, the downside of prostitution. Be AWARE, just because it's LEGAL, you can still encounter the same problems you'd expect to find on the 'illegal' or seedier side of prostitution, such as drug use, crime, petty theft, STD's, AIDS and underage prostitutes. Know your surroundings and just because a kid tells you he's 18 doesn't necessarily make it so. You are NOT innocent until proven guilty in Costa Rica so don't let your vacation turn into an unintended, EXTENDED one. Ask to see some proof.... really.

Looking for gay sex? Personally, I'd stay away from the streets boys. Craigslist and other social networking sites are low risk with many options. There's bath houses, such as Club Hispalis, which is probably one the BEST and BIGGEST in San Jose. Club Hispalis has great facilities, theme nights, shows and a bar and snack area. Of course any of the gay bars in San Jose, Bochinches, Club Oh, La Avispa and especially Pucho's are all hook-up possibilities . And MOST gay and/or gay friendly hotels offer 'massages' from boys that offer BETTER than 'Happy Endings'. Also, most of these hotels can get YOU in touch with someone to 'show you around' or take you OUT Clubbin if you're traveling solo, obviously for a PRICE.

A popular GAY magazine here is Gente10, a good resource for GAY info. Gente10 is in Spanish, but you can get the jest of EVENTS, times and so forth, and they also have a map with all the gay HOT spots marked.

A few CRUISY areas in San Jose are La Sabana Park (Sabana gets sketchy at night), the National Park (north of Avenida 1, Between Calles 15 &19) and the Plaza de la Cultura which is in front of the National Theatre (between Calles 3 & 5) during late afternoons and early evenings.

Sabana Park is much less sketchier in the day time.

If all else fails, taxi drivers can ALWAYS take you to whatever it is you want to get INTO- CAREFUL, some are sketchier than others.

Stuff to consider when playing in the SEX world. Take taxi's at night. Leave valuables in your hotel room. Know your surroundings. Don't get TOO up. Consider getting your Hepatitis B shot before coming to Costa Rica (talk to your doctor about Hepatitis). Obviously condoms.... and know that many guys here will have unprotected SEX and others will say, 'NO' to condoms for an EXTRA charge. While cruising the bars, be careful, the guy you're CHECKING out and HOOKING up with could be a hustler and expect payment for services after the fact when you thought it was a mutual attraction hook-up. Most gay and gay friendly hotels will let you bring a 'guest' back to your room but they usually have to register with the front desk and have ID and sometimes there's a charge.

Here's our video of Prostitution and SEX in Costa Rica. This is general INFO on prostitution here in Costa Rica, not gay specific.

Gay Boys in Costa Rica- Kissing Badly

Gay boys in Costa Rica, La Fortuna particularly, are frequently guilty of kissing as if they’re a MUTANT combination of half vacuum cleaner - half Labrador Retriever. This is NOT a GOOD thing for someone like me who LOVES to make-out. Obviously, I’m only going from my own EXPERIENCE (although D'Angelo concurs), but take my word; I have accumulated plenty of data in the last 6 or so years of living in Costa Rica to come to this ‘bad kissers’ conclusion.

The reasons for this lack of kissing skills? Here, many gays are still in the CLOSET and don't get OUT much, so when a gay opportunity presents itself, gay Tico's tend to get OVERLY excited, VERY quickly. Picture a DOG in 90 degree heat that hasn’t had water all day; its BIG, FAT, SLOPPY tongue dragging on the floor, well, my LIPS apparently look like a dish of water. EWH!

Other times I feel like I’m being ‘SLIMED’ or they’re testing my gag reflex with their tongue,,,, which of course we all know is WAY HOT!

SLOW the down for God sake.

Not much is better than making OUT, leaned against the wall, pressed against each other, shirts off, nibble here, bite there, and the NECK- don’t even get me started, BUT,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the moment is often ruined with the puppy dog approach of making-out and for me, can be a DEAL breaker.

I’m all for getting horned up while making out, I get as excited as the next gay guy- the anticipation of SEX is a HOT thing. But BAD kissing can be quiet the BUZZ kill. If this is how they kiss, what’s this Human Vacuum Cleaner/Labrador Retriever going to do when they work their way SOUTH. Bad kissers are 10 times more likely to do other 'heady' acts just as bad, if you know what I mean- another BUZZ kill.

Obviously, inexperience plays a major role and I’m sure many of these guys haven’t had much practice. I’m thinking they have nothing to go by but cheap internet porn, so everything comes down to, ‘the harder the better’. Well maybe, but kissing.

So listen up my HOT tico friends, slow down, think SOFT and keep your tongue in your mouth and I promise you- we’ll get there. HARD comes later.

.... and I'm always lookin to be PROVED wrong. hehe

Club Oh! in San Jose

Club Oh! is definitely one of San Jose, Costa Rica's BEST gay Night Clubs.

Club Oh! really isn't 'all that' as far as the inside is concerned. It's like a BIG, BLACK BOX on the inside- but who cares, Club Oh! consistently spins some of the BEST music around. The DJ's know how to get the crowd going.... and keep them goING and combined with a more than adequate lighting system, the bland interior is made up for by the overall ENERGY of the place. Hell, if it was just me and the DJ, I could still have a bomb-ass time....

Club Oh! puts on its fair share of events- White Party, Black Party, Drag Shows, Stripper Shows etc, so make sure to consult a local gay magazine like Gente 10 to find out what's coming UP.... but more times than NOT, Fridays and even more so, Saturdays are the BEST nights at Club Oh!

Club Oh! usually has drink specials, such as paying 6,000 colones (approx. $12.00) at the door which gives you unlimited beers from 10:00pm til 1:00am, or for a little more money (approx. $16.00)- VIP privileges with unlimited cocktails. The 'open bar' can get overly crowded at times which can get a little frustrating, especially on Saturdays, if waiting isn't your thing, stop by Club Oh! after 1:00am. *Obviously, prices could CHANGE.

WANT to see what goes on inside CLUB OH! CHECK-OUT our VIDEO

CLUB Oh! Formerly Déjà Vu, is located on Calle 2 between avenidas 14 and 16.

Coyaba Tropical in Manuel Antonio

GAY, but very straight-friendly, Coyaba Tropical in Manuel Antonio Costa Rica has a COOL New Addition.

Coyaba Tropical, a mostly gay but VERY straight-friendly, B&B, located in beautiful Manuel Antonio, next to another place we like, Gaia Hotel and Reserve, has added a brand NEW pool and jacuzzi area. SWEET!

We love Coyaba Tropical. In the gay, internet travel world, it's known as a gay-owned, B&B, but really, it's a VERY straight-friendly destination and probably has just as many COOL straight people staying there as gay.... probably because COOL straight people know gay places are the places to GO *wink-wink* But the major draw just may be Mike and Paul because they're the consummate hosts- it's like staying with family.

Well, now Coyaba is that much better with a pool and jacuzzi area. Now, I'm going to go out on a limb here as this is MY personal opinion about what's going to happen at Coyaba- Mike and Paul did NOT tell me this. BUT, I believe as they get more popular with gay travelers, Coyaba Tropical will become exclusively gay and the POOL and Jacuzzi area will be the place to be... clothing optional anyone? The first video is one we did a few months ago, the second is a quick look at the new pool and jacuzzi area. GREAT JOB on the pool area guys. Can't wait to test it out... naked. hehe

Happy Costa Rica Independence Day BIGOTS

Travel Gay Costa Rica NOW knows BIGOTS. They're easy to spot here in Costa Rica because they typically look EXACTLY like the Roman Catholic Church. So today, which is Costa Rica's Independence DAY, we've decided to give a little Shout Out to our straight, bigoted friends,,, all in fun of course.

The Shout Out comes in the form of a song and I picked this particular song because I think it succinctly says it ALL, 3-minutes of music to answer years of discrimination, prejudice and just out and out HATE.

So to ALL my closeted, GAY friends (especially my gay Tico, friends), let this SONG give you the COURAGE to step-out in style.

I dedicate this SONG to the following folks/organizations who seem to have a hard time finding the LOVE and ACCEPTANCE in their tiny, hate-filled,hearts:

* First and foremost, the Roman Catholic Church, for obvious reasons.

* Family members, so-called friends, or ANYONE for that matter, who have made it, or make it hard for young, gay boys and girls to come-out.

* The redneck owner of Don Rufino's Restaurant in La Fortuna, Costa Rica who openly discriminates against 'gay'.

* The likes of Pat Robertson, James Dobson, and the very FAT but thankfully DEAD, Jerry Falwell. Side note: The death of that SOB was one of the BEST days of my LIFE, barely edged out by the birth of my children and of course WINNING a BIG ass house in FIJI.

* OH, and an old childhood friend, Rick Jones, who deleted me off his FACEBOOK friends list for being too GAY... whatever that means.

Feel free to learn the words and SING a long, it's really quite catchy... and GAY!

Picking UP Gay Boys in Costa Rica

Gay Clubs in San Jose, it’s EASY to pick-up gay boys.

Yup, it's easy-peazy to pick-up 'gay' in San Jose, even for a no Spanish speaking, ugly ass, Chester-the-Molester type, gringo.

But before I begin, let's getting something straight- I’m not a pimp. I could be but I’m not. Although if you’re visiting Costa Rica and you happen to be partying with me and D’Angelo, we have on occasion been known to make introductions, but that’s as far as it goes *wink-wink*. So please, quit with the emails asking to “hook you up.” But we also get tons of emails asking us where to pick-up gay boys in general… that I can help you with. Obviously it’s not a problem in San Jose since gay bars such as Pucho’s, La Avispa, Club Oh! Bochinches and others make it pretty easy, but it’s not so obvious in towns across Costa Rica where there is no ‘gay bar’.

Here’s my TIP for picking up guys. We live in La Fortuna. There are no gay bars here which is pretty much the norm in Costa Rica. But just because there’s no gay bars doesn’t mean there’s no gay guys. HELLO, gay is everywhere. Matter of fact, La Fortuna couldn’t be any more gayer (almost seems like it's in the water), also like many towns around Costa Rica… Whoo HOO! Just find out which bar is the ‘happening’ place on that particular night and go there. Gay people gather and gay people dance- they will be there, usually hanging out together in small groups or with their fag-hag friends. *And don’t forget, MOST ‘straight’ Ticos will do gay 'stuff' with a couple beers under their belt, although you definitely need to be a little bit more on your game to score a 'straight' guy.

In places like San Jose, Manuel Antonio and Jaco, gay boys, usually prostitute types, will approach YOU, but in small towns like La Fortuna, they normally won't. You'll have to make the first move and you’ll have to be half-way subtle about it. Especially if they’re in groups, don’t forget, many gay Tico’s are in the closet no matter how gay they appear, so you gotta be sensitive to that and if you’re trying for the ‘straight’ guy, he has to be alone when you make a move... for obvious reasons.

If you’re the type to belly-up to the bar and WAIT for the action to come to you, you’ll be waiting a LONG time unless you’re at the above San Jose hangouts. Buy the guy a beer or two or send them over via the bartender if you’re a little timid. Find a chance to say something when he’s by himself “Usted es muy guapo.” works for me. Then of course there's always the 'gaydar' eye thing... that connection when we all just KNOW,,, but when you do this, try not to do the pervy, Chester-the-Molester, stare-down... you know the one, usually after too many cocktails and you actually believe the other person is as attracted to you as you are him and then you totally embarrass yourself by becoming too 'aggressive'... or at least the next day your friends tell you you embarrassed yourself.

Bottom line, you got to be somewhat assertive… not aggressive, just assertive. I think you just may be pleasantly surprised by the outcum. And when all else fails, remember, you’re a GRINGO, they think you got money… they already half love you and also remember, you can't SCORE if you don't PLAY. GOOD LUCK!

WARNING about La Avispa Gay Nightclub

La Avispa, one of San Jose's BEST gay clubs, is at its gayest on Sundays.

D'Angelo and myself love, Love, LOVE Avispa Discotheque and there IS no better place (straight or gay) to party on a Sunday night. Our advice- have fun on Saturday night but save a little in the tank for Avispa on Sunday. But this post isn't about the party scene there, it's a **WARNING** a 'heads up' so what I'm about to tell you doesn't happen to YOU.

La Avispa is notorious for guys trying to separate you from your MONEY. Many of the guys, cute, little, boy-toy, wannbe, prostitutes. Some are harmless and just want gay tourists to buy them drinks all night, others will do MUCH MORE if that's where you want to go. They'll show interest, start dancing with you... and of course want you to buy them drinks,,,, I'm sure you get the picture, but if you decide to play that 'game', just be careful where it leads. *On a side note, watch how much you drink... for obvious reasons.

Here's what happened to us at La Avispa one Sunday. We saw our friend Ed dancing with a really CUTE, twink boy. Nothing against Ed, but something just wasn't adding up,,,,, we told him to be CAREFUL and watch himself. Not 5 minutes later when they were dancing, kissing etc. a tranny, working in tandem with CUTE, twink boy, tried to gangster Ed's wallet......problem was, even though Ed was being distracted, his wallet had a chain on it....so, needless to say, he felt the tug. Next thing I know, a tranny goes flying against the wall. CUTE, twink boy got away but tranny was not so lucky and was picked up by La Avispa security........ you've been WARNED.

Other than that,,, La Avispa is GREAT place to have a GREAT time.

And in case you haven't seen it, our La Avispa video which will give you a good idea of what you can expect. ENjoY!

Young, Gay, Tico's COMING OUT Sooner

In Costa Rica, young gay boys are coming OUT much sooner, as evidenced on any given Sunday at La Avispa, one of the oldest and BEST gay clubs in San Jose Costa Rica.

*There's a VIDEO we did of La Avispa below, CHECK out all the cute, young faces of Gay Costa Rica.

Finally, Gay takes a positive step forward in Costa Rica. WHOO HOO! I always LOVE hearing good GAY news in Costa Rica where 'gay' and 'good news' rarely go together.

There was an article in one of the Spanish newspapers, La Teja, about how young gay Tico boys are coming out of the proverbial CLOSET earlier and earlier. La Teja reported many gay youth are claiming their homosexuality between the
ages of 12-15. WOW! I think we all know how hard that is in the BEST of circumstances and believe me, especially in Costa Rica but I give serious PROPS to ANY young gay boy or girl who can come OUT at such a young age. I've written about it on many occasion how difficult GAY can be in Costa Rica. And of course I put most of the blame where it belongs, squarely on the shoulders of Archbishop Hugo Barrantes and the Roman Catholic Church, who are obviously on a Crusade to make being gay very difficult. This is Barrantes lookin all Catholic.

My Spanish isn't all that, but I think I understood most of the article and unfortunately it wasn't all good gay news. Where there's progress there's usually some problems as well. In this case, the schools and Costa Rican society in general aren't quite sure how to handle GAY... and gay at such a young age. So as you might suspect, these young gay kids have run into various degrees of discrimination, humiliation and prejudicial treatment for who they are. School seems to be a particular concern because teachers and administrators appear ill equipped (or unwilling) to deal with such a sensitive issue. The article even mentioned the Harvey Milk High School in New York City, which was designed to be a safe space for students regardless of sexual orientation. A school like Harvey Milk in Costa Rica would be perfect now, although progress is being made, much of the country still regards homosexuality as a sin... gay Tico's need a safe place to LEARN.

Obviously, more needs to be done. Families of gay, as well as the folks who teach them need to be educated and given the tools to deal with their young gay minds... and ALL the issues that come with being GAY. But all in all, the fact young gay Tico's are coming OUT sooner, is a great positive step. Anytime GAY is being discussed- that's a good thing.

Here's a video we did about a protest outside the Gran Hotel in San Jose, Costa Rica. I loved the FACT their were a LOT of young GAY Tico's showing their support at this protest:

And here's the La Avispa Video. ENjoY!

Gay Friendly Villa Decary in Nuevo Arenal

Hotel Villa Decary in Nuevo Arenal (about 50 minutes from La Fortuna) is both 'gay owned and operated' and 'gay-friendly' and would probably be GAY ONLY if it wasn't located so far from La Fortuna. For the record- it's hard to do 'gay only' in the rainforest when it's fairly far from a major tourist destination.

As the video BELOW will bare out- Villa Decary is a great option for any 'gay' or 'straight' folks who don't want to be smack in the middle of anything 'touristy' and appreciate B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L surroundings, complete with animals.

Give me a camera and I'm ready to GO.

Villa Decary is not only beautiful, but it is also known for a few other things as well, great for birding, (I think we spent hours watching the Montezuma Oropendela's feed their young while having morning coffee) and speaking of the morning, the breakfast at Villa Decary is to die for...love the fresh breads. Villa Decary also has like a million different types of palm trees on the property because of the previous owner's interest in palm trees.

The Costa Rica Palm Society recently visited Villa Decary.

Anyway, why write when I can show you. Here’s our VIDEO review of Hotel Villa Decary in Nuevo Arenal-

Living GAY in Costa Rica is GAY!

Living as a gay man or gay couple in Costa Rica is a LOT different than traveling as 'gay' in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica LOVES to market itself as an extremely 'gay friendly' travel destination but I can tell you, living here gay is a completely other matter.

Our belief about living gay in Costa Rica is that Costa Rica takes former President Clinton’s, ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy for military gays, one step further- culminating in, ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and Don’t ACT’…… GAY in Costa Rica. Most Costa Ricans have the exact same attitudes toward gay folks as the majority of North Americans held back in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. Read that as- ‘IT’S A SIN.’ However, it should be noted; Ticos are some of the nicest people on the planet, and wouldn’t normally think about discriminating you to your face. We’ll get back to that later.

For this post:*Acting gay does NOT mean swishing your ass back and forth with a pink boa draped around your neck. For this article, ‘acting gay’ is defined as hand-holding and any other public displays of affection that straight persons would enjoy without fear of repercussion. Seriously, WTF does acting ‘gay’ mean anyway? Are you acting ‘straight’? So, it’s an act? If acting gay is swishing your ass and talking with a lisp, then acting straight must mean tight jeans, leather jacket and saying the f-word a lot. Could these be stereotypes? Ummmmmm.

Many gays that live here in Costa Rica voiced that we should act as ‘gay’ as we want out in public; as that’s the only way the country will eventually change its attitudes and views regarding homosexuals. That is indeed true, but it won’t be at OUR expense. The most effective ‘POSITIVE’ impact will come from gay Ticos themselves. As gringo’s living here, we are not viewed as real citizens (and WE'RE not), and in fact, would come across like we’re ‘pushing’ our gayness where it’s not wanted, which also won't win any points. Although I do realize BEING who you are in public can help shed some of the misconceptions with some folks. But therein lies the problem.

A Brief History: We live in La Fortuna, and most people know we’re ‘those gay gringos who live next to the park,’ and we do get left alone. It should also be noted, we’re not HUGE fans of public displays of affection by ANYONE, but I’ll admit it would be nice to stroll around the park, or anywhere for that matter, holding hands, or stealing the occasional kiss (ok, we’ve done it a few times,,,whatever). The irony is Tico’s LOVE to ‘make-out’ in public, and often appear to be about 2-seconds from doin' the nasty at any given time. The other irony, La Fortuna is home to an unusually high number of gay Ticos, C-L-O-S-E-T-E-D, but numerous nonetheless.

You’ll frequently hear many other gay, expat gringos say they’re ACCEPTED by their ‘straight’ Tico friends, or by the community in general in which they live. This is probably true, but only because the gay couple in question, act in public, as if they’re merely friends. I got a million bucks saying unless you knew they were gay, and you might, you wouldn’t necessarily KNOW they were gay. Knowing ‘gay’ and seeing the act of ‘gay’ are entirely two different things- know what I mean? So they fulfill the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and especially the Don’t ACT’ policy to a tee. So why wouldn’t they be accepted? Let them start ‘acting gay’ and rest assured, things would be quite different very quickly.

When we first arrived in Costa Rica they may have thought we were gay but they weren't sure...which is the way they like it.

Flaunting your gayness in Costa Rica will NOT get you an invitation to Christmas dinner at the mother of your ACCEPTING Tico friend. Will they discriminate against you to your face? Maybe, maybe not, but paa..leeez, Ticos, might be nice to your face but they can also become extremely passive/aggressive when they feel they've been disrespected. Especially disrespected in such a sinful, immoral, blatantly gay way. You WILL BE discriminated against in the most subtle of ways- waiters/bartenders become a little slower (not sure that’s possible here), paper work remains at the bottom of the stack longer, more mean-spirited stares and whispering by resident rednecks and you can definitely feel the 'distance' many will keep once they know you're gay.

Personally, we’ve been blatantly discriminated against, in probably the most popular restaurant in La Fortuna, Don Rufino’s. It was U-G-L-Y. One of the owners had no problem loudly voicing his dislike and disdain for “us GAYS” in front of about 15-20 patrons. And take my word for it, not one person had the guts to stand with US- Ticos or Gringos, friends or not. We have NEVER set foot in their AGAIN.

We haven't stepped a foot inside of Don Rufino's for the past 5 years now.

What is TRUE, if you’re ONLY visiting Costa Rica, gay couples can often get away with MUCH MORE gay-like behavior. Tico’s just figure it’s those, ‘CRAZY, GAY, GRINGOS,’

“Let’s at least get their money before they 'S-W-I-S-H' back to where ever it is they came from.”

So, if you hold hands walking down La Fortuna, locals may not say a thing. Personally, I don’t believe it’s worth the risk. It’s the same reason we would tell you to drink bottled water (why risk it when you're only the country for a 10-day vacation). So, we stand-by our Travel Tip of playing it cool as a gay person or couple visiting Costa Rica, with a couple of possible exceptions- San José and Manuel Antonio, and to a lesser degree, Jaco.

Just remember, why do you think 80% of gay Ticos are STILL in the CLOSET? The exact same reason it can still be difficult to 'come OUT' in the STATES- Matthew Shepard was NOT that long ago and some are extremely uncomfortable with the possibility of losing their entire family- Yeah, it happens here, a LOT.

Gay Men in Costa Rica USE Condoms?

The gay men in Costa Rica, San José and La Fortuna particularly; seem fine to engage in SEX without the use of a condom. (I say La Fortuna and San Jose because that is where most of MY 'gay' has been experienced). This post is not about SEXUAL morality, because with all due respect,I don't care what you think, I'm just making some observations about condom use as it relates to gay men in Costa Rica.

For the Record, my view is this: SEX between 2 or more consenting adults - CASE CLOSED - after all, they're consenting adults and it's NONE of my or anybody else's business. If you care, that's YOUR problem.

Anyway, these are merely MY observations based on my experiences; hardly scientific to say the least. I don't want to spread inaccuracies about gay men in Costa Rica, but something is amiss, because I’ve had enough sexual encounters with gay Costa Ricans in the last 7 years to draw some conclusions in regards to their sexual ‘irresponsibility'. Just so we're clear, I'm not talking about prostitution, although I would bet the gay prostitutes and trannies here are MORE apt to use a condom. But I digress.

The gay men were between the ages of 18-34. ALL would be considered educated in direct correlation with their age. Most were ‘BOTTOMS,’ and yes, I think that's important. Most were ‘closeted,’ also important. Many would be considered a ‘hook-up,’ while others were more like ‘friends with benefits.’ They all knew I had a boyfriend.

Sex is defined as PENETRATION. The FACT of the matter is, NOT ONE TICO DEMANDED the use of a condom when it came right down to it (remember, most were BOTTOMS). Don’t get me wrong, many times condom use would be discussed but for whatever reason would become a formality and quickly dismissed. Ultimately, THEY DIDN’T CARE, or at least, care seemed to fly out the window the moment we were butt-ass naked and turning back didn’t seem to be an option. Not one of them actually knew I put one on and if they were ‘TOPPING’, of course it was DEMANDED, but again, they wouldn't have 'wrapped up' unless I told them to. *I know you want to hear numbers, SORRY, let’s just my experiences were enough to form some ‘scary’ conclusions.

Afterwards, I would ask them why they didn't demand I wear a condom but I think you could guess as to the ‘whys’ - the excuses seem somewhat UNIVERSAL whether you're in the States or here in Costa Rica: Impaired judgment from alcohol/drugs. Blind Hope/Trust/Faith in 'me' the partner. Caught-up in the moment. Then of course there's always the one about I wanted to 'feel' it in me... whatever. *None were ignorant to the fact a condom should be used. I could go on and on about what someone may or may not have been thinking, but the bottom line is- the SEX would have happened regardless of a condom.

FYI- currently there are approximately 13,000 people living in Costa Rica with HIV/AIDS and don't even get me started on the STD's running rampant here.

And this is the REASON for the post- Visiting 'GAY' Costa Rica? Want to sample the local flavor? Want to be the kid in the candy store? Sweet, no problem...... but WRAP THAT SHIT UP... because odds are, the Ticos won't... or haven't.. and it's much better returning to the States with fond gay memories of the cute little Tico boy at the beach than a yellowish discharge escaping from your penis.

Know what I mean?

Goin' Gay at Gaia Hotel in Manuel Antonio

Gaia Hotel in Manuel Antonio Costa Rica- Where GAY goes to be GAY in Luxury.

Hey GUYS! If you read my other blog Doin' Costa Rica, you know I already posted about the Gaia Hotel and Reserve in Manual Antonio. BUT, what I didn't mention and what we don't mention in our VIDEO review of Gaia, is that it is EXTREMELY gay friendly. Technically, Gaia Hotel and Reserve labels itself as an 'ADULT ONLY' hotel... and let's be honest, that's a good thing. But anyway, guess who owns Gaia Hotel,,, 4 gay guys. Four gay guys that are also businessmen and not STUPID, so instead of trying to alienate or draw any particular group of people, they EMBRACE them ALL. So 'ADULT ONLY' works. Besides, I don't mind the term, 'ADULT ONLY', I think it is a much better term than 'gay friendly' or 'straight friendly', and I think most people are smart enough to know what the term implies.

Great PIC of Gaia Hotel taken from the highest point of the Reserve located on the property.

One of the owners of Gaia was telling me that much of their clientele comes from Canada and Europe, which there, they could care less about 'gay' anyway, and when we were at Gaia that was surely the case... no one gave a fuck about our gayness, whether we were 'gay' frolicking in the pool... or having an intimate dinner at Gaia's 5-Star restaurant. Everyone just did their own thing like us and after doing 'our' own thing we'd usually end up socializing around the bar at the pool or in the restaurant. Needless to say, the BEST of both worlds- socializing and intimacy... in luxury of course...hehe.

This post is an FYI to anyone interested in staying at an extremely luxurious hotel with other like-minded adults- gay, straight or otherwise. Bottom line- we think Gaia Hotel and Reserve just might be the Manuel Antonio option you're looking for.

Here's our UPDATED video of Gaia Hotel and Reserve in Manuel Antonio. ENjoY!

Traveling GAY in Costa Rica - VIDEO

Gay Costa Rica? Gay-Friendly Costa Rica? Tolerant gay Costa Rica? Anti-gay? Would the REAL Gay Costa Rica please stand-up.

Bottom line- are Costa Ricans really THAT accepting of the 'gay' traveler?

The answer is kinda, sorta, "YES," but with a few caveats.

Let me explain. First, the Tourism Board here understood a long time ago, that GAY people have plenty of cash to spend, and after all, 'Green' is 'Green' no matter who's spending it. Technically, that's the answer. But I can tell you this, Costa Rica doesn't CARE if you're GAY necessarily, but they damn sure don't want to SEE GAY. Let me say that again-

"BUT they DAMN SURE don't want to SEE GAY."

So, here's our take on traveling Costa Rica as a gay person/couple (and a little bit about living here gay) and what you can expect. ENjoY!

Doin Gay Costa Rica becomes Travel Gay Costa Rica NOW

First it was called, 'Doin' Gay Costa Rica'. It was on 'Blogger'. It got flagged for 'ADULT' content and vanished into GOOGLE search engine oblivion. It was very frustrating because it was doing well in the search engines. It took me forever to switch it over to a Wordpress.com format because I'm NOT internet savvy, and even after I did make the switch, it was never the same again. I lost interest and concentrated on my regular blog, Doin' Costa Rica.

Now, they're telling me I have to come up with $125. to keep my domain name, DoinGAYCostaRica.com. That's not happening to keep around a .com that I don't even keep up and that no one reads (and then there's a little issue of money). So, I'm going BACK to my comfort ZONE, which is 'Blogger' and starting, TRAVEL GAY COSTA RICA NOW.

Be patient. I'll be re-posting OLD posts that are relevant to GAY Costa Rica.. and of course be writing NEW gay content.
